Comic Book Icons Through Social Media

​When it comes to the most popular comic book icons, everyone is going to have their own take. Perhaps it is the story of a character that helps to make him or her stand out or maybe it is more of a matter of superpowers. Regardless, Synthesio has taken something of a swing at the superheroes and supervillains that have made the biggest impact on social media, monitoring the popularity of these larger-than-life identities. While most of the list came across as obvious, others may prove to be surprising.

When it comes to the most popular comic book icons, everyone is going to have their own take. Perhaps it is the story of a character that helps to make him or her stand out or maybe it is more of a matter of superpowers. Regardless, Synthesio has taken something of a swing at the superheroes and supervillains that have made the biggest impact on social media, monitoring the popularity of these larger-than-life identities. While most of the list came across as obvious, others may prove to be surprising.

The comic book character that ranked the highest was Batman at 30 percent, the Joker at a close second at 29 percent. It isn’t hard to see why, considering that their feud is one of the strongest in all of fiction. Not only is the contrast between the two characters apparent – Batman donning darker colors and Joker with livelier hues for a villain – but their history is especially strong. All one has to do is look at “The Dark Knight,” which is still heralded by many as the strongest superhero film out there, to see how heated their battles were and still are.

As you can see, two DC characters have topped the list; three if you count Superman who landed in third at 23 percent.

What was interesting, though, was how the feud between Marvel and DC stood in terms of percentages. For starters, DC Comics – at 59 percent – managed to trump the 41 percent tied to Marvel Comics. This didn’t exactly translate to the super team of each brand, though. Marvel’s Avengers overshadowed DC’s Justice League at a 70 to 30 percent ratio. I’d like to chalk this up more to exposure in films, seeing as how last year’s “The Avengers” does not have strong competition on DC’s side, seeing as how nothing has been confirmed.

There is something to note about superheroes and the amount of interest that they hold in networking. Any social media agency can tell you that these identities are going to garner attention. Some of these may be perceived as surprising, though; for example, even though Magneto made the list, one would imagine that Loki would be a more obvious choice. Not only does Loki possess a tremendous fan base – both male and female – but his role in the upcoming film, “Thor: The Dark World,” should have helped to elevate him further.
