Dating 101: Facebook- Splitting Couples Up Since 2004

Can you remember the Internet world before Facebook? – Neither can I. I’m still trying to figure out how I remembered my friend’s birthdays or kept in contact with relatives before the launch of Facebook. It’s a whole new world out there on the web- where the fate of a couple’s relationship is no longer safe and social media now holds some blame.

The dating world has completely changed in the past 10 years. Everything couples do or say is now posted on Facebook or other social media sites. This causes more fights (most of which are posted publicly on Facebook timelines) and breakups than before.

Your boyfriend gets a friend request from an unknown female in her bathing suit- UH OH! Your girlfriends ex messages her asking how she’s been. Couples who have once argued face to face or in public are now taking their arguments to their Facebook walls and it’s not a pretty sight (although for the outsiders of the argument looking in it can be quite entertaining).

Nothing is kept a secret anymore (as most members know). From pictures you didn’t want to surface of you and that guy at that party, to your phone number and address. Facebook has become the “stalking site” of the world and because of this, relationships are no longer private.

Needless to say, issues with social media and relationships stem off of jealousy. “How do you know him”, and “Who is this girl you just became friends with?” are typical conversations couples have these days. We, as normal unknown citizens, are now seeing what it’s like to apart of a celebrity couple (minus the being rich and famous part). Their lives in the spotlight and having everyone know their business at all times leads to disaster, similar to what Facebook does. If social media hasn’t been the cause of your break-up, guaranteed it has caused more arguments than before.

Of course there are those couples who are strong enough to allow their trust to overpower the giant we’ve come to know as Facebook. Can your relationship withstand the social media monster? No one enjoys being a part of a love triangle- so remove Facebook from your relationship!
