Major League Baseball Now Entering the Social Media World

Major League Baseball has seemed to realize the NBA’s use of social media and have decided to integrate social media into their game as well. Next week is the MLB all-star game in Kansas City and the hype is incredible. Being a huge sports fan, I am excited for the social media integration and can’t wait to tweet at my favorite players.

When the all-stars are announced they leave a spot open on each team for fans to vote in the final player. The final player vote has been going on for a few years now and has been a pretty fun way to keep fans involved in the MLB all-star game. The fans usually are able to cast their final vote online but this year there is a new way to cast your vote. This year you are now able to tweet your vote in using specific hash tags for each player on the final ballot. Since Twitter is being integrated into this process, fans are now able to not only use their computers but their smart phones as well to cast their vote.

Social Media is very popular in many industries but for some reason the professional sports industry has been reluctant to integrate social media into their industry. This past season the NBA really began to use social media on their telecasts and even had a social media awards show, the first ever of that nature. Although the MLB all-star final vote is a very small piece of the 162 game season of professional baseball, it shows progress that another popular professional sports league is beginning to use social media sites as well. This can result in more usage from the MLB and possibly the NFL and NHL are next.
