In a technology-oriented world, the traditional newspaper is becoming less and less necessary. People are more apt to look online for news than to go and buy a newspaper at their local store. This is even more so in the college community. With this generation of students being so much more tech savvy than others, it seems that there is really less of a need for the traditional newspaper because social media can accomplish much more.

While most schools aren’t simply getting rid of their traditional newspaper, it is becoming outdated and students aren’t relying on it as they used to. For example, I go to St. Joseph’s College, a commuter school in Patchogue, NY, and we only put out one newspaper per month. What happened to the weekly, and even at one point daily newspaper being released on campus? Well, if you want the answer to that question, you can just look at Facebook and Twitter for the two biggest reasons.
At St. Joseph’s, almost every club on campus has its own Facebook page and Twitter account. With all of this utilization of social media, it seems inefficient for students to have to skim through an entire newspaper to find the information they need when they can just look online. If your club or organization has any updates that you need to be aware of, just check your Facebook or Twitter account.
Even if you’re looking for updates about your college in general, most of them have an automated email service now to update their students. I know that whenever there is something happening on campus, the first place that I hear about it is through my student email account. And with regards to club updates, I just check my Facebook newsfeed for any events or meetings coming up.
Now, this might seem a bit sad that the traditional newspaper on campus is being replaced by social media – I understand because I actually write for my school’s newspaper. However, we can also see this as a new opportunity. This is an opportunity for this generation’s tech savvy individuals to put their knowledge and skills to good use by making the most of social media. Maybe social media can accomplish everything that the traditional newspaper has always done, and perhaps eventually this social media trend will extend even further than college campuses.
