Bohemia NY – On September 13th, popular online marketplace, eBay announced their plan to unveil a new logo to coincide with changes to their website debuting in October.
According to an article published on Mashable, eBay President David Wenig “appears to have fully embraced eBay’s transition from an auction site to a storefront, pointing out that most items are sold on eBay through the ‘Buy It Now!’ option as opposed to auctions.” It seems consumers are straying away from the auctions, and would rather buy the item right away. In the article Wenig also stated that eBay fully embraces its transition from auction site to storefront.
Wenig went on to state, “The eBay logo is known the world over, so changing it was not a decision made lightly.”
The new logo chosen is very different from the original, utilizing a simple font called Universe Extended, which, according to the article, is reminiscent of Microsoft’s new logo. Wenig described the new logo’s design as reflecting the “cleaner” and “more consistent” experience that eBay offers.
“I do not think the decision to change their logo will affect them at all. It’s clear that eBay will still be a well-known marketplace no matter what,” said Sida Li, Social Media Director at fishbat, Inc. “Although some sources like Business Insider suggest changing your company logo is never a good idea, I commend eBay for deciding to do just that; it shows that the company is growing and moving forward.”
According to the Mashable article, the new logo will officially roll out in October. The article also stated that eBay will launch an advertising and marketing campaign at the same time as the logo release.
