Are you like me, over 50 and still learning the benefits of social media? Are you afraid you are making grave mistakes when you hit the SEND button? Knowing how to use social media effectively without making mistakes can make or break the future of your business.
In the 1970’s, there was no such thing as social media, at least to the general public. It was only privy to the military. If you wanted business exposure, you made a phone call and met only with the head of a particular department in a particular area. The only mistake you could make was not contacting the right person to get your message out. It was more personal then too. You would attend a conference or meet for lunch or drinks while making your business transaction. As the business relationship developed, it went beyond business associates. The conversations would include business opportunities, move onto family life and end with setting a tee time for a golf outing next time you were in town. In those days, business decisions were based on face to face visits and length of time you knew one another. Times have changed since the development of social media.
Computers were a rare commodity until the 1990’s when social media revealed her. Using social media to get your business known can be explosive or deadly especially if you don’t know how to implement it. In a split second your business information becomes part of the cyber world reaching millions of people in different genres in a single second. Business is done at lightning speed and the last thing you want to do is make a mistake. An oversight can knock you off the grid. When I want to inform the public of a new service I am offering, social media is the only way to go, but I’m not quite sure if I am using it properly. What if I am not reaching my target audience or using the appropriate words required to get my message across? In the old days I picked up the phone and I had all the time in the world to share my new business endeavors. I only have that one chance to do it right and I know after I post, there’s no going back.
You need to play the game of social media if you want to keep up with your competition. I don’t want to be the fool that shared a link I didn’t read and found out later that it offended half my clients. This type of error can place you under a cloak of misrepresentation. Has this happened to you? Have you cross-over to the world of social media and are you aware of its abilities to help your business grow? I don’t know about you, but I am still trying to keep up with this new way of communication. I still pick up the phone on occasion.
