How Being Social isn’t Being Social

If we take a peek back into the days of yore, (well maybe not that far) being social took on a totally different personality. People used to talk, go out and socialize, make phone calls, send letters in the mail, even just show up to a friend’s house without invite and being welcomed in.

If we take a peek back into the days of yore, (well maybe not that far) being social took on a totally different personality. People used to talk, go out and socialize, make phone calls, send letters in the mail, even just show up to a friend’s house without invite and being welcomed in.

In today’s world, everything is digital. Yes, it makes communicating a lot easier, but does it make socializing that much less personal? In reality it does. Social media is a tool that brings people together; it is an aid to a person’s social life. However, people are using it at a crutch and are not socializing outside of the digital world.

Is that social media’s fault? No. As I said, it is an aid to being social. It allows for further communication between individuals. As a communication major and I am a firm believer that communication is the key to anything that happens. Without communication, there would be no socializing. As an aid, it works perfectly. However when used as a crutch, it will only harm what is left of the old system of socializing. Will it ever get to the point where guests at an engagement are mingling via Facebook? I hope not.

So how do you fix that? How can you mend your legs and get off that crutch? Use it to find information, not to spend 12 hours a day on. Post your photos, make a few comments, look up a few other things, and then go outside and do something. Social media should not be something that takes over your life. Many people have been addicted to it, and that’s a shame. Use it for what it was made for, and don’t be that guy. Be social in the digital world, but also in the real world.
