Living the Startup Life

According to an article posted on Mashable, young people who are searching for a job would rather work for a small startup than a big company. As I’m currently working at a startup this article caught my eye and made me realize the advantages of working at a startup as opposed to a huge faceless corporation. Social media marketing is a field I enjoy working in and the startup environment makes me love my job even more.

The first major advantage is the ability to do meaningful work. At a large corporation you will be given tasks to do with seemingly no rhyme or reason and you are never truly able to see what your hard work has done or if it had any effect at all. At a startup you will be working on important projects and be hands-on with a lot of tasks where you will be able to see your hard work pay off. There is never a better feeling than receiving great feedback on your work not only from your bosses, but also from the client you are working for.

A startup also provides you with a lot of room for growth. Your bosses are able to really see what you bring to the table as an employee and there can be quick advancement if you are able to prove your worth. You won’t be passed over for a promotion just because you haven’t been at the company long enough.

Startups also provide a setting where your opinions matter. Startups are not locked in their ways and are always open to suggestions for making things run more smoothly. Large corporations often have established practices and are much more resistant to change. There is nothing set in stone at a startup. A startup can sometimes seem like the Wild West because there are no rules, but this environment often turns out to produce the best work and allows employees to thrive.
