I thought it would be important to make note of the fact that everything we say on the internet can and will be held against us. That your personal information is not so personal. That websites collect your data for your “convenience” so your accounts will cater to you, in return making it super easy for hackers to hack and stealers to steal all of your valuable information. Making it incredibly easy for anyone to keep track of you.

I’ve pointed this out because maybe people don’t realize but when you enter your information into anything internet related, you are essentially handing over extremely delicate information about yourself, including your phone number, address, credit card number, even social security, freely. Would you walk up to a complete stranger on the streets and deliberately give them your social security number? Would you trust that stranger with your identity?
How is the internet any different from a stranger on the streets?
In a recent BBC News article, it describes a cyber-attack occurring in Israel and Iran, “one of the most complex threats ever discovered” according to Russian officials. The malware, called Flame, has said to be in operation since August 2010 and has hacked its way into the most private data of citizens, businesses, and other institutions. Flame has gone unnoticed for a long time before anyone figured it out. Just think of how many other malware systems there are in existence today as you read this post. Still think it’s safe to input your most important information into the world wide web?
Yes, it is much more convenient to simply sit in a chair, click around and do all of your shopping online instead of taking a shower and driving to a store. But maybe convenience is a downfall, a finger pointed towards the lazy, towards the naive who think a “secure browser” is really secure. I would be lying if I said I never did any online shopping myself, that I didn’t love the simplicity of ordering all Christmas presents via Amazon.com. But I become overridden with anxiety when entering my precious information, so much that I try to refrain at all costs. I prefer the dragging of myself out of bed and shopping in a store and paying for everything with cash.
Before deciding to advertise your life and identity to the entire world by providing your credit card numbers and social security numbers and even social marketing yourself, remember that everything is fair game on digital land. You very well could be the next hunted.
