One of the nation’s leading online marketing companies, fishbat, offers input on how the quality and quantity of professional connections can help streamline a job search.
On July 7, 2013, fishbat, one of the nation’s leading online marketing companies, explains the importance of using dormant ties to expand and enrich professional networks through social media channels.
According to a June 17th article on LinkedIn titled “Finding the Hidden Value in Your Network,” sometimes having weak connections to people you once knew could be beneficial when conducting a job search. The article says acquaintances are actually better able to assist in job searches than close friends. A new study also shows that people are 58 percent more likely to land a job through weak ties rather than strong ties.
In addition to strong and weak ties, the article says there is a third tie to complete this triangular network. Dormant ties are forged and bonded through mutual life experiences. A college roommate, childhood neighbor or past colleagues are individuals you’ve spent a lot of time with in the past, but have lost touch with or been too busy to contact. Dormant ties are often easier to reconnect with due to the past history and experiences shared together. Because they are not closely associated with your tight knit established network, they could increase your pool of contacts to draw upon.
Justin Maas, vice president of client relations at fishbat says social media channels make it very easy to reach out to dormant ties and maintain relationships with them.
“Social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin are designed to connect with people who you have shared past experiences,” he says. “They could be from high school, college, the work place and any other relevant social circle. These platforms allow users to be informed about changes in their lives without being in constant contact with them. Because your relationship is based on a shared mutual experience, dormant ties are often deeper, more valuable and richer than stronger ties, which are already very familiar with your viewpoint and network. Online marketing companies can use dormant ties through social media channels to help businesses better match their services and products with consumers.”
