In response to an article published on Mashable, fishbat, a leading online marketing firm, discusses the recent popularity of social media vacations.

fishbat, a leading online marketing firm, comments on an article discussing the need for Americans to take vacations from their social media networks.

In an article published by Mashable on July 13 titled, “Why Americans Need Social Media Vacations,” more people are taking a break or “vacation” from their social media networks. The article reports the findings of a new study that suggests at least 50 percent of social media users have either taken a social media vacation or have considered taking a social media vacation. This is mostly due to the fact that many social media users feel that they are overwhelmed by all of the accounts they manage.

Even though users may feel like they need a break, the article says 60 percent of those surveyed said that they experience anxiety from being disconnected from their social media networks. The reason for the anxiety, the article explains, comes from the fear that users have that they may be missing “an important event or status update if they don’t monitor their social networks.”

Justin Maas, vice president of client relations at online marketing firm fishbat says most people are dependent on technology these days. “Checking up on social media sites has become part of the regular routine of many social media users,” he says. “Not checking social media accounts is like turning off a cellphone, you are disconnecting yourself from a network of people and by doing so you are becoming less accessible.”

Social media has become an integral part of the daily lives of many, Maas says. However, sometimes taking a break from social media can also be a good thing.“While many of us rely on social media to stay connected with friends, family, or even co-workers, it’s also best to take a break from it,” Maas explains. “Schedule out part of your day to do something else and take a break from all the status updates and Candy Crush invitations. You will feel refreshed after doing so!”
