The Social Media Gamer: Social Media Overload

I want to dispel a common assumption – that gamers spend a lot of time on social media. It’s no surprise that most gamers use social networks; after all, they tend to be an internet-loving crowd. However, gamers do not actually spend that much time on social media – they’re too busy gaming! There are more and more new social networks popping up each day, including Microsoft’s So.cl. Some of the other ones I have recently tried out include Bo.lt, Wish and Waygoz.

Gamers mostly stick with the basics – Facebook, Twitter and YouTube – for time reasons and also because that is where the influential gamers, like Seananners, are. Most of the tertiary social media networks do not attract the gaming community. YouTube is an especially large time sink for many gamers. There is a large YouTube gaming community that uploads videos and commentaries of their gameplay, with many of the largest channels receiving tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of views per video.

As a gamer, I never find myself sticking around any of the new social media firms that are popping up (not even Pinterest, which some people spend more time on than Facebook). The bottom line is that none of them offer an experience that beats gaming.
