The purpose of many articles online is to inform, and a lot of what we write help answer specific questions or give people advice. However while our articles might be informative, that doesn’t mean they can’t also be entertaining and fun – and if you want to come off as a real wordsmith and impress your readers (which is very good for SEO) then you need to think about making your articles enjoyable to read as well as just dry and informative. Here we will look at how to do this and how to make your articles really come alive.
Tell a Story
First of all it’s important to make sure you realise that even the most dry subject can be told as a story. Try to make your article into a narrative with a beginning, middle and an end and try to plan ahead so that you have more of an idea of where you’re going with your article.
Introduce Yourself
A good article doesn’t simply leap in with its points before introducing the topic and setting the context. It’s very important then to make sure that when you start the article you start off by setting the scene and the tone for your article with some related statements. You will then develop or explain these opening points in order to create the meat of your article.
Grab Attention
While you need to ease your readers into the flow of your article, you still need to make sure that you do this in a way that will grab attention early on – it’s crucial that you make some kind of impact early on otherwise you will lose your readers. A more effective way to begin this article for instance might have been to write ‘most articles online suck’ – which would have instantly grabbed attention and got you interested while also allowing me to then provide elaboration and explanation in the rest of the article without it jarring.
Use Headings
Notice how this article is split up into lots of nice little headings? This helps a lot to keep readers interested and keep the article flowing. Large chunks of content are highly off putting for readers because they don’t allow them to skim read to the parts they want. With headings they can save time by jumping straight to the parts of the article they are interested in.
Address the Reader
A good article should make it feel as though the writer is addressing you directly and should flow in the same way that a conversation might. Of course this is a far more engaging way to rite than is writing in a manner that just provides the reader with information to passively absorb. Even better than just writing in a conversational manner is to include winks and nods to the reader that acknowledge your relationship and the medium which will make the reader feel even more involved and allow you to somewhat break the fourth wall.
Tie it All Together
One of the best techniques to use to make your article seem well planned and thought out is to echo the introduction in your conclusion. For instance then you might ask a question in your opening, or you might make an outlandish statement; and then in the conclusion you could answer this statement or you could adjust your opening statement to give the whole article a nice rounded feeling.
The purpose of your articles is to inform, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun doing it.
