On April 14, Chris Hansen, the internal promotions manager at fishbat, Inc., discusses Facebook’s new trial feature involving celebrity messaging and voting for MTV Movie Awards with Instagram.

The newest “fishbat Splash” video outlines how Facebook’s new feature in the UK could produce a lot of spam. According to the Guardian, Facebook is testing out a new feature in the UK that allows users to pay a fee to privately message celebrities. Each celebrity would have a specific price varying by popularity. The most popular celebrities could be contacted by paying around £11. Facebook says offering paid messaging features could reduce spam. However, Hansen says it could prompt fans to send multiple messages, which would actually increase spam.

The video also details the value of using social media to promote user engagement during award shows or on live TV. The MTV Movie Awards, which airs on Sunday at 9 p.m., introduced a new way to vote this year. Creators of the show are encouraging fans to vote for nominees in the “Best Hero” category by tagging their tweets or Instagram photos with the appropriate hashtag. For instance, #VoteBilbo secures your vote for Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit.” Hansen says it’s a smart move by MTV because they’re taking advantage of popular social platforms and integrating them into the show.

“The 2013 MTV movie awards seems to have a great appreciation for the interactive capabilities of social media,” Hansen says. “Being able to vote, and in some cases keep tabs on stars, gives viewers a greater sense of connection than simply being entertained during an award show. I’m curious to see where this trend goes and how it changes the dynamic between media and viewers.”

The final part of the video introduces the Textecution app, which discourages texting while driving. As an [online marketing company, Hansen knows technology is a part of every day life. However, he says it’s not worth a life. “Don’t text and drive,” he says. “This app actually tells how fast your phone is traveling. If it’s in a car, it’s probably traveling over 10 mph. In that case, the app turns off your texting capability until it’s in a resting position.”

Hansen says it’s important to understand the dangers of texting and driving. To find out more, visit the Texting Awareness Foundation website.
