In the latest episode of “fishbat Splash,” account executive Kaitlyn Gallagher recaps the biggest digital stories from this week, including the Associated Press Twitter hack and Twitter’s new security measures.

On April 28, Kaitlyn Gallagher, an account executive at online marketing firm fishbat, discusses the recent cyber attacks on the Associated Press Twitter page and how the social network is beefing up security.

The latest edition of “fishbat Splash” first details the impact of the recent cyber attack on the Associated Press’ Twitter account. Fake tweets were sent out under the AP Twitter account claiming there were explosions in the White House and President Obama was injured. After these tweets, the Dow dropped over 144 points, but quickly recovered.

fishbat account executive Kaitlyn Gallagher says it’s easy to see how influential Twitter is to society and the economy. Gallagher says many corporations need a bigger team to constantly regulate social accounts like Twitter. “The bigger Twitter gets, the more appealing it becomes for hackers,” she says social media agencies constantly monitor their clients’ Twitter accounts to reduce the chances of an unwanted hack.

According to NPR, hackers from the Syrian Electronic Army first implemented an e-mail phishing scheme to obtain passwords for the Associated Press Twitter account. The fake e-mails, which were sent to AP employees, contained malicious links. The links launched viruses, which compromised employees’ computers, the article says.

However, Gallagher says Twitter is developing a two-step verification process to reduce the chance of getting hacked. She suggests that companies increase security precautions by changing passwords, eliminating access from third party applications, and educating employees on unsafe Internet behavior. “I was impressed that Twitter created this verification process so quickly, and I think it’s really going to make a difference,” Gallagher says. “However, I also recommend companies take extra precautions and make sure their connections are secure.”

Finally, in honor of the last week of National Distracted Driving Month, “fishbat Splash” spotlighted the Vlingo smartphone app. The app allows people to use voice commands to respond to text messages. While it’s similar to Apple’s Siri feature, Vlingo has more capabilities. “It can be a good tool to prevent distracted driving,” Gallagher says.
