In the latest edition of fishbat Splash, account executive Anya Kominicki recaps the biggest digital stories from this week, including the Boston Marathon bombing, Twitter’s hashtag donation and Twitter Music.

On April 20, Anya Kominicki, an account executive at fishbat, details Twitter’s hashtag donation to benefit Boston bombing victims and Twitter Music.

The latest edition of “fishbat Splash” first discusses Twitter’s effort in helping Boston bombing victims by donating a trending hashtag. On the Tuesday following the bombing, Twitter donated the hashtag#OneBoston, a $200,000 value, to The One Fund Boston. The fund, created by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, was designed to help those affected by the Boston Marathon bombing. Though it was only promoted for a day, Twitter made a great effort to support victims, Kominicki says.

“This is another great example of the potential for social media to serve as a call to action,” Kominicki says. “Twitter has stepped up in the past when they used their ‘Ads for Good’ program to offer pro-bono support to non-profits and organizations providing aid and disaster relief. They were a major player in the fundraising efforts after the Haiti earthquake, and they haven’t slowed down. Platforms like Twitter can be robust centralizing forces for crisis relief efforts, and we love to see that the company takes its role as a communications powerhouse seriously.”

The video also discusses Twitter Music, a new music discovery app. The highly anticipated app allows users to peruse Twitter to find samples of new songs and stream them through the feed, according to the company’s blog. The new app could be downloaded for iPhone or your desktop. It uses iTunes, Spotify and Rdio to stream music. Kominicki says it’s an opportunity to discover new bands and could be a great marketing tool for musicians.

As part of National Distracted Driving Month, fishbat also highlighted another device that could help prevent texting while driving. Cell Control, is a device that uses a trigger to disable your phone when in the car. Plugged into the OBD part of the car, Cell Control prevents you from making calls and texting when the car is moving. For more information on the dangers of texting while driving, fishbat says to visit the Texting Awareness Foundation website.
