In the latest edition of fishbat Splash, fishbat’s business development manager, Tim Greening, recaps the biggest digital stories from this week, including the arrival of Facebook Home and the viral Mike Rice video.
On April 6, Tim Greening, the business development manager at fishbat, Inc., comments on the announcement of Facebook Home and the viral video of former Rutgers coach Mike Rice.
The newest “fishbat Splash” video highlights the growing power of social media for relaying the news. When a shocking video of Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice surfaced, voices on different social media networks began to sound off. Within the first day of its posting, the original ESPN video of Rice physically and verbally abusing players received nearly a million views. Though it was taken down, many other news outlets also began to share their version of the video.
“Social media tends to amplify everything because news is shared so easily,” Greening says. “If you do something good, a lot of people will know about it – but if you do something bad, the whole world will know about it in minutes. Videos, especially, tend to be shared very rapidly on social media.”
The video also details Facebook’s announcement of Facebook Home. On Thursday, Zuckerberg finally revealed the piece of technology at a live-streamed press event. Facebook Home is much bigger than an app, but smaller than a complete operating system, Greening says. “Facebook Home is kind of like a custom home screen for Android cell phones,” Greening says. “It integrates your entire Facebook network and layers it over your normal home screen. Its seamless technology lets you visit other apps without being disconnected from Facebook. The HTC First will be the first cell phone preloaded with the software, available on April 12.”
Greening says Facebook Home could open up new avenues for advertising with mobile ads. “It’s a completely different platform, so it could definitely be a possibility for mobile marketing in the future,” he says. “Zuckerberg said in the past that his main focus was mobile advertising, so this could be a step in that direction.”
At its conclusion, the video also reminds people of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. “April is distracted driving awareness month,” Greening says. “As a social media agency, fishbat knows how hard it is to put down the phone, but we’re asking that you do so in the car. There are many apps, like DriveSafe.ly, that could help you stop texting and driving. For more information on the dangers of texting while driving, visit the Texting Awareness Foundation website and ‘Like’ them on Facebook.”
