Obama can be called the social media president, since he is the first to use it to get to the White House. Therefore, you would probably assume that the Obama’s team would be experts at it. So, it therefore came as a bit of a shock to some that they would make a Tumblr post featuring a meme brandishing the phrase “Vote Like Your Lady Parts Depend On It,” along with a link to Obama’s women’s health initiatives.

And, people are certainly offended by it, saying that they would never vote with their “lady parts” (the statement was that they should vote as though their lady parts depended on it, but, accuracy is not humanity’s strong suit). Twitter users have found the slogan “disgusting” and “offensive,” and are furious that Obama would come up with it (He didn’t but, once again, strong suits).
So, is this a social media scandal? I doubt it. It’s certainly on brand: the Obama camp has been pretty consistent in decrying the “Republican War on Women” as they term it. And, it is a successful social media post: people are talking about it.
What about all the people who are angry about it? I read through dozens of Twitter responses, and it looks as though the people upset about it weren’t going to vote for Obama anyway. I don’t think it really is going to make him lose any votes.
But, is it a mistake? I would say, yes. For at least a few days, news time that could have been spent discussing the merits of his campaign is now going to be focused on this issue instead. And, while I don’t think it’s going to cost him the election, a missed opportunity at this stage of the game is not what he wants.
