Facebook will soon be a public company and that means having to answer to shareholders. Facebook’s upcoming IPO means a lot of scrutiny from potential investors, and judging by multiple reports from around the financial community, they are not impressed by the way Zuckerberg is carrying himself. The hoodie that he frequently wears isn’t the problem, but it is an easy symbol to latch onto. The more sensationalist headlines (like my own) would have you believe that Zuckerberg’s physical appearance at investor meetings is the actual thing that worries them. However, they’re really just projecting their concern that he is not taking the IPO seriously enough by showing up late to investor meetings (or not at all).

Let’s say that Mark Zuckerberg decides to wear suits when meeting with future investors. Does that mean he’s had a change of heart, or does it mean someone told him that he needs to dress up so the press stops commenting on his attire? Just because he changes his clothes doesn’t mean he’s going to change his behavior. Let’s use a wedding analogy. Using a wedding proposal planner to plan your proposal might be a great idea for some folks, but you run the risk of following something that’s against your personality.
Heck, does it even matter? I doubt investors are going to decline purchasing Facebook stock because of this issue. I was going to invest in Facebook, but I didn’t like the way Mark Zuckerberg dressed in meetings. Think about how absurd that sounds.
At the end of the day, Facebook’s continued success will not depend on Mark Zuckerberg’s fashion sense. If only running a successful business were as easy as dressing in a suit…
