Google instituted the Penguin update on April 24, 2012 with the intent of providing more quality websites in Google search results by getting rid of webspam. When the changes were implemented the effect for many in the search engine optimization field was a negative one.

According to a survey conducted by Search Engine Roundtable, 65% of people in SEO industry were negatively affected by the changes made. This means after Penguin went into effect they began receiving less traffic to their website(s).

Penguin destroyed the rankings of websites that were “over-optimized”. According to a report on GSQi, websites where 80% or more of their links were inbound got punished severely by the Penguin update. This report also made it clear that the Penguin update has been very effective at identifying the proper sites as there has been a low false positive rate associated with the update.

Search Engine Watch listed these as the three main factors that Penguin identifies and punishes:

  • High number of low-quality backlinks
  • Backlinks coming from websites that fall under different categories and seem unrelated
  • High number of links where the anchor text has keywords that are identical

These are the things you need to be aware of as you are working on optimizing your website, but trying to avoid punishment at the same time.
