In the Wall Street Journal today there’s an article about social media tools designed for people who make, shall we say, a bit more than average. The companies that make these tools say that this is because wealthy people are concerned about privacy issues: if they post that they’re going on vacation next week, their houses could be burglarized, for example.
These tools all share the same major themes: increased privacy controls and a relatively high price tag (which is still cheap, but pricier than Facebook which is, of course, free). And, apparently, people are signing up for them. The question, however, is why.
Why would only the wealthy need increased privacy? Are they the only ones who ever have crimes committed against them? And, why can’t people just be careful what they post and not give away anything they want to keep secret, even if they are rich? Is safely using Facebook truly so difficult for fully grown adults that they need a special program in place to protect them from themselves?
The answer is simple: they don’t. If anybody needs these tools, it doesn’t matter how much money they make. And, I’m not even sure that anyone really needs these tools. So, I feel that they are problems in search of a solution. And, if you have the money and want to waste it, why not?
