Winning an Oscar is about more than professional achievements. It’s the biggest opportunity for self-promotion in the entirety of an actor’s career. For Leonardo DiCaprio, this moment was the ultimate testament to his character.
As his friends, family, and fans looked on in utter astonishment and reverence, he proceeded to take only half of his allotted speech time to thank his supporters and spent the rest, almost two full minutes, to speak on behalf of the environment. The negative repercussions of climate change are just as important to Leo as his friends and family.
For most celebrities, that full length of speech acceptance time would have been used giving thanks and selling themselves as an actor deserving of future awards. Not for Leonardo DiCaprio. In fact, Leo’s approach to his two minutes in the sun was even more successful than the actors and actresses who came before him.
In speaking passionately and fervently about what he truly cares about, something that affects us all and not just the select few running Hollywood, he became his own best PR agent. The amount of positive feedback and interaction on social media he has received since that fated day in February has been off the charts.
This concept of passion=attraction is one of the most important elements of marketing (especially in today’s digitally interconnected world). Leo didn’t just get up to that microphone and speak about what was relevant to his career. He spoke about something incredibly important not just to him, but to all of us.
For anyone trying to sell themselves, this is the way it’s done. Speak honestly about the things you are passionate about—what you are an expert in. That passion is what will ultimately drive people to your business. Do your job and do it well, but your real moneymaker is always going to be your excitement for what you do and the messages you convey.
So raise a glass—to yourself, to your supporters, and, of course, to Leonardo DiCaprio (let’s face it, the man deserves it). Let your passions drive your actions and you will always be successful. And always remember to never let go [of your dreams].
