Bashing Facebook online and amongst in-person friends has become more and more prevalent as the years go by. Browse through the comments of any article written about Facebook and you’ll almost always find more negative reactions than positive ones. Why is Facebook receiving all of this negativity? Some of it is self-inflicted, and some of it is not. Here are some of the more talked about topics between Facebook haters:
1.Privacy issues
Facebook has gotten better at clarifying and allowing users to choose their privacy settings over the years, but for every positive step they take, they take another step back. Features like placing ads in the news feed or allowing spammy apps to auto-post status updates on behalf of a user (do I really need to know every action you took on Farmville?) irked users.
2.Show me the money
Facebook’s decision to go public caught the attention of the public, including many individuals who don’t usually follow the business world. Some of them got caught up in the hype over Facebook’s stock and ended up losing money on the transaction. Additionally, Facebook went into overdrive trying to find ways to monetize their platform, most of which came in the form of Facebook ads to benefit online marketing firms.
3.The honeymoon phase is over
Facebook circa 2008 was the hip place to be. As any platform ages, the novelty of the platform will wear off for a certain percentage of the user base. New social platforms like Instagram are the cool kids on the block. When something becomes as ubiquitous as Facebook, it is bound to receive some hate (Apple is approaching this phase as well).
