Following the Transfer Day Frenzy on Twitter

BBC sport breaking news screenshot

August 31, 2012 is known as transfer day among soccer (or, as the rest of the world calls it, football) circles. The majority of the world’s leagues, including the English Premier league, use that date as the deadline for allowing teams to make purchase and trade players. In the age of social media, news of player movement travels almost instantaneously. Twitter was by far the quickest social media platform for spreading transfer day news.

The originators of the transfer stories come from many different sources. Sports media and individual reporters may break the news, or it could come firsthand from the soccer team’s official Twitter account or the player himself. Transfer day differs from anything that we’re used to in the US – the trade deadlines for sports such as basketball or football can’t match the global nature of soccer’s transfer day; many players will be playing in different countries and continents as a result. Without Twitter, the spectacle of transfer day would not be nearly as great. For example, five years ago you would be consigned to refreshing a website the whole day and posting your reactions on a forum. Fans can react in real time when news breaks surrounding their favorite team or player in a way that is much more interactive. Like all things on Twitter, expect a large amount of snarky comments from soccer fans about what their favorite team did wrong or right.

Now that transfer day is over and the dust has settled, soccer fans will turn their attentions to the league and tournament games that their favorite teams will be participating in.
