Internet TV: A New Medium of Entertainment

Recently, I tried starting a show called Arrow, a new drama on The CW based on DC Comic’s character, Green Arrow. When I said tried, I meant it. I learned, an hour prior to the premiere of course, that The CW is not aired through my cable provider here on Long Island. To say that I was annoyed was an understatement. However, as I came to learn, there was another way to see the show.

No, it’s not through illegal downloads! Several websites belonging to television channels have begun to stream episodes of their programs. In the case of Arrow, the premiere was available the morning after, completely free (barring the commercial breaks during the stream). This provides a new outlet for people who either don’t have access to the television, or are away from their homes during the show’s time slot.

This is not the only concept of “Internet TV”, meaning television programs that can be seen online or even shows made for the internet. There are websites such as Netflix and Hulu that stream an assortment of television shows and movies, usually for a monthly fee. In regards to these sites, you can access them from more than just your home computer. Such platforms that can access these streaming sites include iPads, Kindle, and Xbox Live.

While it is great that these shows can be accessed online legally, there is another brand of entertainment that is being created by the internet. These are shows that are made directly for hosting on the internet, where people can comment. Many of these programs started on YouTube, but the rise of other hosting sites such as Blip have made it possible to receive ad revenue from the hard work made on these shows.

The internet and social media has given an increase in the potential for independent creators as well as the ability for larger media producers to expand their programs viewership to people who would not be able to normally see the show at its regular time slot. Does this mean the downfall of the television? The answer is a definite “perhaps”. With the right cable hookup, you can watch these internet-based shows on your big-screen, high definition television with only a fraction of the annoying commercials.

One must also take into consideration that censorship laws on the internet is not exactly as restricting as television. You can get away with a lot more on an internet-based show than television. This not only has to bring responsibility to the producers to create a show that is tasteful, but it also may tempt ordinary people to watch these internet-based shows instead of television, where they normally couldn’t get the programs they’re looking for.

Only time will tell how Internet-based shows will affect the entertainment industry.
