Social media marketing agency, fishbat, Inc., comments on new policy for Baltimore Fire Department.

On November 5th, 2012, social media marketing agency, fishbat, Inc., comments on an article published by The Washington Post regarding a new policy for The Baltimore Fire Department.

According to The Washington Post, “The Baltimore Fire Department is implementing a strict new social media policy it began devising in the spring to regulate what firefighters post on Twitter and Facebook.” The article reports that some are criticizing that the new policy violates the First Amendment.

“The policy says firefighters can be reprimanded for anything they write online about their jobs that doesn’t show ‘good judgment’ and ‘courtesy and respect for the public and to fellow employees.’ They are restricted from sharing information about fire scenes,” explains the article which went on to state, “Fire Chief James Clack began drafting the policy after fire personnel complained online about city leaders and their decisions to close fire companies.”

fishbat’s Social Media Strategy Manager, Nick Renna, stated, “It’s very difficult when policies get involved with social media in terms of censorship. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a policy such as this be implemented and while both sides on this issue have their points, we will have to keep an eye out to see how effective this policy is and what will come of it.”
