Bohemia, NY – September 02, 2012

On September 3, 2012, social media agency fishbat positively responded to a recent news story on nydailynews.com about the recent ‘Reconnect Project’, which encourages social media users to disconnect from their digital lives on Sunday, September 2.

According to nydailynews.com, the ‘Reconnect Project’ was put into effect in an attempt to get people to abstain from social media for 24 hours. As reported by nydailynews.com, all those engaging in the project were told to reach out into the real world and do something creative and tangible. The product created by the disconnected would be uploaded and available to share after reconnecting onto social media the following day. “Paint, sing, write, film, photograph. Just be original,” the Reconnect video proposed.

fishbat VP of Client Relations Justin Maas applauded this project and the fact that it both encouraged taking a break from social media as well as using it. “The ‘Reconnect Project’ was an inventive way to promote personal creativity and face-to-face communication in place of social media for a day,” Maas said. “But the project also gave people a reason to reconnect through social media the following day, since people could now tweet and talk about the creative things that they did during the blackout.”

“It’s not a festival, there’s nothing to win – but lots to gain,” the nydailynews.com article stated. The project’s creators had been hoping that people could take a break from social media and explore their inner creativity. “Because of this project, people who are constantly connecting through social media will be less likely to take it for granted in the future,” Maas said. “This shows that social media can go hand in hand with a person’s own creative potential.”
