I am not old enough to truly remember beepers (thankfully), but I feel that is where texting began. Paging “01134” to your friend just to say hello instead of actually giving them your number began this era of people who are afraid to actually talk to someone.

Texting is the main form of communication in my life, and I’m not convinced that I even like it. It’s difficult to get humor across sometimes and I often find people getting angry or upset with me via text message because reading words provides no sense of how I am saying something or in what way I meant it.
The worst part about the increase in texting is people are now afraid to actually deal with problems by talking. I was recently on the phone with a woman who shall not be named and we were starting to discuss our relationship more seriously. I was shocked when I was told to continue the conversation in a text message because she didn’t want to talk about it over the phone. No one can handle conflict anymore. Have a problem with someone? It’s time to hang up and text them how you feel, instead of actually using your voice to get your thoughts across.
The worst part about texting is it allows you to avoid certain people in a very passive-aggressive way. The good ol’ “I didn’t even get your text” excuse is perfect for not answering people and blaming it on technology. Just another way texting has destroyed personal communication.
All of the problems I’ve listed thus far don’t even touch upon the fact that texting has destroyed the ability of people to write with proper grammar, but that’s a blog for another time. For now, text a little bit less and actually speak to people a little bit more.
