If you’re reading this right now, chances are you are an active social media user. Imagine a person in his or her mid twenties who does not have a Facebook account. What is your initial reaction? Let’s be honest – you probably thought they were socially awkward, deathly concerned about their personal privacy, or trying to act too “cool” for Facebook. If this were a real life conversation, you might have looked at them like they had two heads. Whatever your reaction might have been, chances are you judged their personality in some way.

Just over 50% of the American population is on Facebook. Compared to the percentage of web users in America, about 3/4 of them use Facebook. These are astounding numbers, but at the same time that also means half of the population in the US is not on Facebook. No, the “old people don’t use Facebook” excuse doesn’t work anymore; over 30% of its user base is over the age of 35. This also means if you are using social media marketing, you may only be reaching half of your target.
From what I can tell, people who do not use Facebook aren’t that different from the rest of us. Maybe they’re not up to speed on the meme or viral video, but what does that matter in the grand scheme of things? So then, how does the other half live? In my opinion, not much differently than the rest of us.
