Over the years social media has been expanding and becoming an everyday part of life for many people. Not only are social media sites a great way to interact with friends and share the day-to-day activities of your life, they are also a great place for advertising.
Many have grown used to seeing advertisements on their Facebook and Twitter feeds, but now, according to an article published on Mashable, Instagram is about to be next.
Emily White, the director of business operations for Instagram said that the company is preparing to begin selling ads within a year’s time. Since Instagram is still a fairly new form of social media to many, most of its focus up until now has been on building a large user base, and so far it’s been fairly successful.
As the article states, Instagram announced Sunday that it reached 150 million active monthly users, which is 100 million more than they had in February. With a huge user base, Instagram must now shift its focus to advertisements.
For Instagram users, this news probably stirs up some mostly negative feelings, but for businesses and social media agencies, this would open a door to many new advertising opportunities. The photo app, available for smartphones and tablets, has become one of the most popular ways for people to share their favorite photos. It will provide businesses with the opportunity to creatively post picture advertisements that can grab the attention of millions in under a minute. The new video feature would also allow businesses to post short video clips similar to television commercials that could reach a much larger audience of people who are on the go.
As an avid Instagram user, I am not looking forward to the day when my picture feed becomes flooded with advertisements. I feel like it could potentially cause many people to stop using the app temporarily. Since advertisements already flood our world, it was refreshing to see an app lacking them. However like everything else, I do believe that eventually I, as well as others, will grow so used to seeing Instagram advertisements that they won’t be such a bother.
On the other hand, from a social media agency standpoint, I feel that being able to create Instagram ads would not only be fun, but also allow for much more creativity and personal expression than a traditional Facebook or Twitter post. It would leave much more room for interpretation. After all a picture does say a thousand words!
