Does anyone else feel as though every week another public figure has done something to tarnish their PR strategies as a result of their twitter posts? There is a very lengthy (and still growing) list of popular personalities that have caught flack for comments they made on twitter that were not well thought out. Within the past month alone a member of the Miami Heat was fined for his comments about the NBA lockout and Ashton Kutcher was criticized on the front page of many newspapers for his comments about the firing of Joe Paterno.

Public mishaps like these are the very reason why online reputation management is so vitally important. A simple human blunder, like acting on emotion and speaking before getting all of the facts can have long lasting effects that can severely wound public relations. It is probably an important to have social media resources like Twitter act as a positive PR agent and not a negative. I was pleased to find out that some adjustments had been made to help prevent future PR crippling eruptions. Ashton relinquished a majority of his posting responsibilities to a social media agency. These online reputation management firms are the ideal solution for handling social media and PR accounts for people and organizations. Twitter and other social media platforms have the potential to become the “end all be all” in regards to PR and should be handled with care. With any luck, Charlie Sheen and Kim Kardashian will also enlist the help of a social media agency and possibly save themselves from further deterioration.
